Tinned fish may be having a moment now, but they’ve been a staple of Russ & Daughters almost since our founding in 1914. Our great-grandfather, Joel Russ stocked his shop to the gills (pun intended) with a variety of them. During WWII, when metal shortages resulted in the rationing of canned foods, he kept an unmarked warehouse around the corner from his shop—a speakeasy for secret tinned fish transactions. This gift set includes five tins - sardines, sprats, anchovies, mackerel, and cod liver, and comes in our custom tin box to keep as a memento of the Lower East Side.
